RIGHTS STATEMENTS WORKSHOP

National Digital Library of India (NDLI)

a project of Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India and executed by Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur), nationally facilitates setting up of digital repositories/libraries and awareness building about copyright and evolving paradigm of rights in the era of digital libraries.

Rights related matters of digital objects, especially with respect to online cultural heritage, are international in nature. An international consortium called RightsStatements.org, of which NDLI is a member, has drawn up statements describing the rights of use that may be assigned to digital objects. These statements, called RightsStatements, are interoperable rights and reuse information for digital Culture and Heritage contents. Leading digital libraries of the world, like Europeana, Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) and New York Public Library (NYPL) have adopted RightsStatements in their libraries.

NDLI, in its endeavor to build awareness in the country about the paradigm of rights in the domain of digital libraries and to facilitate adoption of RightsStatements for affixing standardized rights and reuse information for digital Culture and Heritage contents, is organizing a one and half-day National Workshop on Adoption of RightsStatements for Digital Libraries in India to make the organizations involved in Culture and Heritage contents and library aware about RightsStatements and to facilitate adoption of RightsStatements. The Workshop will be conducted by RightsStatements experts from Europeana, NYPL and DPLA and leading Copyright experts of India. Also a one and half-day Pre-Workshop Brainstorming Session has been scheduled to deliberate on RightsStatements in the light of Indian Copyright Act. The detailed program schedule is given below. The venue of both is Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law, IIT Kharagpur, Kharagpur, West Bengal.
