Prof. Partha Pratim Chakrabarti is a distinguished Indian computer scientist and academic leader, widely recognized for his contributions to Artificial Intelligence (AI), formal methods, VLSI-CAD and embedded systems, algorithm design, and fault-tolerant computing. He completed his B.Tech and Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT KGP) in 1985 and 1988, respectively, and has been a faculty member at IIT Kharagpur since 1988.
Prof. Chakrabarti served as the Director of IIT Kharagpur from July 2013 to June 2019, where he also held key roles including Professor-in-Charge of the VLSI Design Laboratory and Dean of Sponsored Research and Industrial Consultancy. His leadership saw the expansion of research infrastructure and national academic programs.
He has published over 250 research papers, supervised many doctoral students, and led major research projects in collaboration with government and industry partners. His work on automated reasoning and AI applications to complex synthesis and optimization problems is highly regarded in academic circles.
Prof. Chakrabarti’s excellence has been honored with prestigious awards such as the President of India Gold Medal, the Swarnajayanti Fellowship, and the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize—one of India’s highest scientific honors. He is also a Fellow of major Indian science and engineering academies.
