NDLI history
NDLI or National Digital Library of India is an initiative under the National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). It has been developed by the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT KGP), under the aegis of the MoE, Govt. of India. It is a single window platform providing learning resources that make e-learning and education accessible to all. It brings digital repositories from India and the world to users of all demographics.
Genesis
The genesis of the National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is an inspiring story of collaboration and innovation. It emerged from the collective vision of the Ministry of Education and the National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Their goal was to create a digital repository of learning resources with a single-window search facility, meeting the diverse needs of learners across the nation.
The project began as a pilot (NDLI Phase I) in April 2015 and lasted until 30th September 2017. Phase II initially spanned from 1st October 2017 to 31st March 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic extended this phase until 31st March 2021. The Ministry of Education, Government of India, initiated Phase III of the project, scheduled from 1st April 2021 to 31st March 2026.
The NDLI Portal (www.ndl.gov.in and https://ndl.iitkgp.ac.in) was nationally launched on 19th June 2018. Its primary aim is to integrate significant Indian digital and non-digital libraries into a single-window platform, ensuring educational resources are accessible to everyone.
